This is hyraceum (also referred to as “Africa Stone”) – the petrified odoriferous droppings and jelly-like urine by the Procavia capensis, or Stone hyrax. The hyrax lives in the same areas for generations, their droppings and urine become almost like a fossil overtime, similar to the amber from Pinus succinifera.

This animalistic perfumery material is harvested without disturbing the animals and can be used as an ethical substitute for deer musk and civet, which require killing or cause stress and pain on the animal.
